Visiting The Cellar under Fortuna
The Cellar under Fortuna
(Rynek 8, entrance from the Town Square)
The Cellar under Fortuna is a small room located under the Lubomelski's family tenement house at Rynek 8 in Lublin. In the seventeenth century, the interior was decorated with polychromes. Painted decoration covers entirety of the walls and ceiling inside. We can see here, among others, emblematic representations, i.e. images with texts. The whole decoration is entwined with lush plant twigs. The room is patronized by the goddess of chance - Fortuna - painted on the celling.
It is the only interior known to us, in which this kind of decoration can be found - based on an album, Emblemata saecularia, published in 1596 in Frankfurt am Main by the de Bry brothers. The book was a very valuable memento, a book for friends' entries, filled with emblematic depictions. Seven graphics from the book, and two, which were added, were painted on the walls of The Cellar. Added graphics are representations based on drawings by the Nuremberg graphic artist Heinrich Ulrich - Cupid and Venus, Fortuna.
The polychrome from The Cellar under Fortuna is a very valuable, unique monument, a witness of the history of Lublin and its inhabitants.
