Lublin and the region were favorite settings to share stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer, the Nobel Prize winner. He was a unique writer, whose works have made the region famous. Where is the setting of each story?

How, in fact, did the world described by the writer look like? How does it look today? Where to find the traces? How do current residents remember him? These questions led us to implement the project "Following Singer's stories. A Literary Guidebook to the Lublin Region."

About the Project

Lublin and the region were favorite settings to share stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer, the Nobel Prize winner. He was a unique writer, whose works have made the region famous. Where is the setting of each story? These stories made the names of the following towns known in the world: Bychawa, Frampol, Goraj, Janow Lubelski, Józefów, Turobin, Tyszowce. Where are the settings of each story?

How, in fact, did the world described by the writer look like? How does it look today? Where to find the traces? How do current residents remember him? These questions led us to implement the project "Following Singer's stories. A Literary Guidebook to the Lublin Region."

To obtain this information we went on a journey. We visited all of the above mentioned towns. We titled this journey “Tales of the Ramblers' Meetings”.

We visited:

  • 12 March 2009 - Lublin
  • 17 March 2009 - Goraj
  • 18 March 2009 - Frampol
  • 25 March 2009 - Józefów Biłgorajski
  • 26 March 2009 - Turobin
  • 1 April 2009 - Janów Lubelski
  • 16 April 2009 - Tyszowce
  • 17 April 2009 - Bychawa

We met many people and visited many places. We collected photographs and oral histories. We took photographs and video recordings. We were also sharing the knowledge and stories inspired by Singer's works. For a few moments, characters known from his stories appeared in in the halls of libraries, cultural houses, schools. Thanks to these meetings we know more about the world which was explored by the Nobel Prize winner. Residents of the “Singer towns” know more about that world as well.

Here we show the gathered knowledge and give an account of the travel. We have gained good experience, and its give us hope for the next trip. We wish II edition. Already looking for stories, places, people, photos ...
