The Mystery „Memory of the Righteous – Memory of Light”

The Mystery „Memory of the Righteous – Memory of Light”

„Lights in the Darkness- the Righteous Among the Nations” project was brought to an end with the „Memory of the Righteous – Memory of Light” Mystery taking place between September 26th and 27th 2008. It was a symbolic bequeathing of the Memory of the Righteous to the next generation.

On September 26th 2008 a clay furnace was built in Castle Square – a place where for ages the Jewish quarter had been situated. On the same day the clay tablets with the names of the Righteous were put inside it. Then, at 2 p.m., fire was set to the furnace. The baking of the clay tablets went on for the whole night, while the youth were reading aloud fragments of  the Righteous" testimonies. Next to the furnace the 130th Psalm was copied onto the pavement, both in Polish and Hebrew. Its presence in this particular place was a significant and symbolic contribution to the Mystery.

“[A Song of degrees.] Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
But [there is] forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
My soul [waiteth] for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: [I say, more than] they that watch for the morning. Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord [there is] mercy, and with him [is] plenteous redemption. And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities”

The next day, September 27th 2008 at 7 p.m. the last part of the Mystery started after extinguishing the fire and cooling the furnace down. The Righteous, whose names were engraved on the tablets, took part in the celebrations.

Mystery started at 7 p.m. with the narrator's words:

„Eight years and nine days ago, on September 16th 2000, in this very place the „One Land- Two Temples” Mystery took place. It was a symbolic meeting of the Righteous and the Holocaust Survivors. Many of those who then took part in the Mystery are no longer with us. But the spirit and the message of that meeting has prevailed. The mystery today  „Memory of the Righteous – Memory of Light” is its continuation and the symbolic end.
We have managed to reach some of the Righteous, their stories have been recorded and their names engraved on clay tablets prepared in the furnace situated in the place of a former Jewish district. Today the memory of their stories is going to be symbolically pased on to pupils and teachers of those schools who have agreed to take responsibility for storing and saving it for next generation”.

Then the Righteous or the family representatives of the late Righteous passed the book „Lights in the Darknes- Righteous Among the Nations” into the hands of pupils and teachers. The books, containing gathered testimonies, were placed in cases provided with clay tablets with the Righteous" names on them. Every school has also been given a twig of the grapevine planted during the „One Land – Two Temples” Mystery in 2000.
